DIY SPELLS

DO IT YOURSELF SPELLS

The best spells are always the ones that you create yourself.

Long ago, magic practitioners used whatever they happened to have around them to create their spells. They learnt as they went along, often from relatives, how to “tailor” a spell for any occasion.

Nowadays, there are books that teach us about various traditions which you can find on our BOOKS page.

There are all kinds of paraphernalia for the modern witch to buy. There are pentagrams, “magical” knives, altar cloths, ”magical” herbs, beautiful bound spell books to write your spells in, with “magical” symbols on the front covers, wands and so on and so forth.

It is up to the individual whether or not to buy these things. They are NOT essentials! Not everyone can afford to buy these (often expensive) items, so make do with what you have. Magic is adaptable.

Real magic comes from within. NOT from stuff!

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?

I've heard that a few times! "Clothes" is my usual answer! :o)
There is no need to wear robes or go skyclad (naked)! As I'm Scottish by origin its a bit too cold and impractical to be honest. But the choice again is yours. However you feel comfortable.

Basic Essentials

A broom ~ (or a basic kitchen brush) ~ necessary for any house cleansing spells, and also very handy for sweeping stuff up!

A knife ~ necessary for cutting/chopping herbs for magical workings, but also useful for peeling veg! (Purple uses a little Kitchen Devil knife)

Candles ~ necessary in all spells to represent the element of Fire, and if the electricity goes they shed light too!

Incense ~ necessary for representing the element of Air, and they make your house smell lovely!

Crystals ~ these represent the element of Earth, but ordinary stones/pebbles would do just as well. Crystals are necessary for various spells as they can draw energy. Clear crystal points are usually the best, and can also be used as a substitute for any other crystals.

A bowl ~ (or a glass or cup) ~ necessary for putting water in to represent the element of Water (surprisingly!)

A wooden or metal box ~ very useful for holding spells in!

A notebook ~ necessary for writing down all your spells.

A pen ~ Also necessary for writing down your spells!

Herbs ~ (dried supermarket ones are fine) ~ necessary for all kinds of spells and you can use them for cooking too!

Salt ~ essential for all spells requiring cleansing and for protection spells. (Handy for chips/French fries as well!)

Surprised that it can be that simple?

Remember that magic practitioners in days gone by would not have gone to the shops!

They drew their magic from their surroundings, from nature and whatever happened to be in their kitchen or garden at the time. Most grew their own herbs as well.

Altars were not made public, and were often disguised as a normal sideboard. (If they possessed one!)

These days spellcraft is more refined, but it doesn’t have to be expensive. It is what comes from the heart that matters.

So, with a few basic “ingredients” you have the makings of not only an altar, but also the basis for the making of your spells.

Check out our ART & CRAFT page for any essentials.

"Where's the spells?" I hear you ask. Well you didn't think I was going to make it easy for you did you? :o)

There are links to them on this page, but in the true nature of spellcraft I've hidden them!

Hover your mouse around the page and you will find them. :o)

WHAT IS MAGIC?

Forget the weird bloke with the ultra white grin, standing on stage, pulling rabbits out of hats, sawing long-legged women in half and making things disappear!

And you can forget the enigmatic guy walking down the street doing card tricks as well! (Yes, I DO mean David Blaine!!!)

Traditional magic has been performed for centuries. Every day people perform “magic” in one way or another. People throw salt over their shoulders, use lucky charms and read their horoscopes.

Real “magic” is a science. And there are so many forms of it most people don’t even realise they are actually performing “magic”. Magic is EVERYWHERE!

Everyone knows that knowledge is power. But information is ABSOLUTE power, which is where Purplepuss comes in!

Words are powerful when spoken from the heart. Think how you might feel when someone tells you they love you. They have performed a type of magic on you through words; it makes you feel wonderful (or it might make you feel guilty if you don’t feel the same, or sick if you can’t stand them!)

Words become the basis of spells, and if worded and spoken or written or recited correctly, their meaning has power.

Knowledge is power. Knowing how to use nature to help you is also an essential in true magic. Many people carry crystals to aid their wellbeing, use aromatherapy to enhance their moods, drink herbal teas and take herbal remedies to make them feel better and listen to mood music by lighted candle to help them relax.

Combine all this with words, and a little knowledge of when, why and what you should use them for and you have the makings of spells.

As with all things though, there are rules that have to be followed.

  1. Magic must never be used to hurt or harm anyone.

  2. You cannot make someone love you.

  3. You cannot use it for personal gain.

Why is this?
There is a natural law and order to things. Whatever you give out comes back to you.

Many Wiccans, Pagans and Pantheists believe that this is to the power of 3. (We've all watched "Charmed" right?) This is known as the Threefold Law. Be nice to someone once and they will be nice to you at least three times. Be really nasty to someone and guess what? It WILL come back to you. Why three? No idea! But there is a law of return. Look to nature... everything has it's cause and effect. So whether it is threefold or onefold or twofold, the principle is the same.

Romany people believe in the sevenfold law. It seems to vary from culture to culture.

Nevertheless, by using magic to harm someone, you are only harming yourself. There are ways and means to help someone who is having problems with another person or people but it has to be done carefully.

Using magic to attempt to make someone love you has a way of backfiring unless the recipient is already interested (and willing)! So when trying to attract love I don’t recommend that you try to use it towards a particular person, but more to the idea of a person. The greatest successes that I have heard of are where a spell has been cast with specific details of what kind of person you are looking for. (See The Love Box Spell) Spells tend to give you what you need rather than what you want so bear that in mind.

I’ve heard of many comfortable Wiccans, but I have never heard of a rich witch. If you need money for any reason, you have to make sure you give away a percentage of what you ask for, because if you don’t it will upset the natural balance of things. (See The Trinka Five Spell)

So if you plan to use magic, remember the Threefold Law, and “Love all and Harm none.”

A Bit About Witches

There have been spiritualists, herbalists and faith healers in all walks of life for centuries, but few were classed as witches. Why? Because they were respectable, upstanding Christian citizens! Yet they are no different from “witches” who practise very similar things.

Nowadays pagans can be relatively free to practise their arts without threat of prosecution (unless of course they are doing something to be prosecuted for!).

Many people still hold the old fear that witches are “evil”, mainly due to ignorance but also due to the bad publicity of total fanatics (and in a lot of cases complete nutters!) that manage to get into the newspapers from time to time claiming they are witches after having been arrested for some heinous crime.

These people had obviously not heard of, or had chosen to ignore  the Threefold Law.  The vast majority of pagans adhere to the law of nature and have a morality code, “Love all and Harm none”.

As we all know, while there are good people and bad people, it is the same with Wiccans. Practitioners of witchcraft can be good witches or bad witches.

If magic is a colour it is grey, it’s the type of person that makes it either ”black” or “white” magic.

Most people do not understand what witchcraft is. “Witchcraft” is just a word that encompasses all and any form of magical workings and alternative therapies using science, nature and rituals. While it is true that in some Third World countries, this involves ritualistic killings, (often known as Voodoo) it is viewed by the general pagan community that this form of witchcraft is barbaric and unacceptable.

Remember  “Love All and Harm None”.
